# Promo codes

> Create discount codes and control which ticket categories they apply to

A promo code gives attendees a discount when they enter it at checkout. Promo codes are configured on the second step of the event wizard — the screen headed **Almost There!**, which is subtitled *Create your ticket type and promo code*.

***

## Where to find it

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the event's ticket step">
    From `Events`, open the event's `⋯` menu and choose `Edit`, then click `Update and Continue` to reach the **Almost There!** screen.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set up your code alongside your ticket categories">
    Promo codes live on the same screen as the ticket category table, so you can see which tiers a code will apply to as you create it.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Info>
  The exact promo code controls are being documented against the live app. If you need a discount code set up before this page is finished, email [contact@tixfix.ai](mailto:contact@tixfix.ai) and we'll walk you through it.

## Good practice

* **Keep codes short and unambiguous.** Avoid characters that look alike, such as `0` and `O`.
* **Scope the code.** Where a code can be limited to specific ticket categories, limit it — an unscoped code applied to a `VIP` tier can cost more than the promotion is worth.
* **Watch the sales window.** A code is only useful while the ticket category it applies to is on sale. See [Ticket types and pricing](/events/ticket-types).
* **Track the impact** in your [sales report](/reporting/sales-reports) after the promotion runs.

## Sharing a code

Promo codes are usually distributed the same way you distribute the event:

* In an email to a past-event audience — see [Email your attendees](/communication/email-attendees).
* Through a promoter running a specific campaign — see [How promoters work](/promoters/overview).
* On your own social channels, alongside the event link.
